Euro 2012: Winner Market Preview

31 May

As the Euro 2012 is just few days away we have done an analysis to try to understand which team can lift this trophy.
Spain are the favourites at 3.90. They are the reigning European and World Champions but they come into this match with few problems. The absences of Carles Puyol and David Villa are huge blows to their chances because those are the two areas they could least afford to lose players.

In attack they have Fernando Torres and Fernando Llorente who are very good strikers but that they don’t make one David Villa especially as Torres hasn’t been in form this season and Llorente don’t have the necessary experience.
History is also against them as no side has ever managed to defend their crown as European champions.

Germany are the second favourites at 4.20; They are a very solid team having reached the final at Euro 2008 and were beaten in the 2012 World Cup semi-final so this could be the right time for them to start winning. They are very strong in attack and have a solid defence but the question mark is on the psychological damage caused to the Bayern Munich players after they lost the Champions League in dramatic circumstances. Germany shouldn’t have too many problems to get to the final but considering what said the price looks still short.

Netherlands are at 8.40. They have on papers all the weapons to win every trophy but apart from 1988 they have always disappoint. This time around they look very threatening but some of their best players had a very long season and others like Sneijder seem to have passed their career’s peak. I think they will get close again but they won’t win!

The dark horses are England, France and Portugal: you can bet on those respectively at 13.00, 12.50 and 20.00. England and France are in the same group and the similarity between them is that they are in transition so they may not deliver for at least another 2 years. Portugal are a more adventurous side but they can’t escape the fact that they are over-reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo who has too often gone missing in major tournaments. Italy are at 15.50. Another betting scandal in the build-up of the tournament has just exploded. They have a strong defence made of Juventus players but they miss real big stars in the team. Upfront they rely on Mario Balotelli who has already proven to be immature, erratic, selfish and impossible to manage. He can be brilliant at times but it impossible to predict in what version we will see him at the Euro 2012. Personally I don’t like the idea that my money will depend on him! They also have Antonio Cassano and Di Natale although the first has missed most of the season due to injury. Italy seem to handle pressure very well but honestly I don’t see them going further than the quarter finals.
