Cesc Fabregas again scored a vital penalty kick for Spain as they were made to work hard for their victory over Portugal in the Euro 2012 semi-final. The dramatic shoot-out win for Spain sees them compete in their third consecutive major tournament final and gives them the opportunity to become the first side ever to retain the European Championships.

The ex Arsenal captain was the hero after scoring Spain’s fifth penalty meaning they beat Portugal 4-2 in the shootout after a tense 0-0 after 120 minutes. The moment Cesc penalty hit the back of the net if sent the Spanish fans and players into wild celebrations knowing they will face either Italy or Germany in Sunday’s final.

Bruno Alves of Portugal was the guilty man missing his penalty that left Cesc the opportunity to guide his side through to the Euro 2012 final his penalty hit the post but to the Barcelona’s midfielders relief it managed to find its way in.

Spain have now an impressive record in knockout matches having won their last 9 without conceding I goal. The game was not impressive to watch but Spain dominate possession as expect but were not in complete control of the game as they were against France.

Xabi Alonso missed Spain’s opening penalty only for Joao Moutinho to miss Portugal’s opening spot kick. Andreas Iniesta scored the first goal of the shootout to send Spain into the lead for the first time in the match. Pepe managed to draw things level, before Gerald Pique scored with a well taken penalty. Nani scored an impressive spot kick sending the keeper the wrong way whilst hitting the roof of the net. Segio Ramos scored one of the cheekiest penalties you’ll see with so much pressure at stake. Once Bruno Alves had missed it was left to Fabregas to steal the limelight after coming off the bench to send Spain into Sunday’s final.

Spain are now favourites to win Euro 2012 with Germany the previous favourites still to play their semi-final against Italy. Spain are priced 4/5 with Bet365 which will shorten if Italy make it through to the final.

With Cristiano Ronaldo out of the competition it appears that Mario Gomez is likely to finish the tournament as the top goalscorer if he’s able to find the net is a great price at 4/6 to win the golden boat.
