Champions League: Paris St-Germain new frontrunners

19 Jul

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival is a game-changer for the Champions League betting market. It is evident that Paris St-Germain are now one of the eight Champions League frontrunners as they have a squad and a manager of impressive quality. Zlatan Ibrahimovic said that he doesn’t know much of French Ligue 1 but they will know who he is.

This is a clear message that the Swede wants to mark this new chapter of his career with a major trophy and obviously the domestic league won’t be enough. Paris St-Germain have also managed to get Thiago Silva under the EiffelTower and they have now cemented their spot among Europe’s elite. Jeremy Menez, Javier Pastoer and Ezequiel Lavezzi are all the other word-class players in the squad. A parallel can be drawn to what ManchesterCity did three years ago even if this is an even louder statement of intent. Silva is surely the best defender in the world and Ibrahimovic is a player who is a title winner in eight of the last nine years with 5 different clubs in three countries.

The Swede is 30 now but there are no signs of ageing. Last tournament was the most impressive of his career where he managed to score 28 times in Serie A: the Italian league is not as strong as in the 90′s but it remains the toughest to score for a striker. He will now focusing the remaining of his career in trying to prove wrong critics that he is not capable of leaving a mark in the Champions League. Bookmakers believe that this will also be the case as his arrival as prompted a major transformation in Paris-St-Germain’s odds to win the competition. At the start of the summer Carlo Ancelotti’s men were as high as 48 to win next year competition and since the arrival of Thiago Silva and Ibrahimovic their odds have been cut to as low as 17. A repeat of last season’s domestic failure is almost unthinkable now and it is quoted at 1.17.

One thing to notice as well is that Italian’s managers are ruling the world currently. Apart from Spain, we have Roberto Mancini at ManCity, Carlo Ancelotti at PSG, Roberto Di Matteo at Chelsea, Massimiliano Allegri at AC Milan and Antonio Conte at Juventus. All the best teams are trusting Italian managers and this is not surprising if you imagine that Prandelli was able to take an average side to the final of Euro 2012 outplaying teams like England and Germany in their way. It would be interesting if there was a betting market about how many Champions League will be won in the next three years by Italians managers. I bet that price would be really low!
