League Cup Betting Tips: First Round

9 Aug

This season starts early and we kick off with the League Cup first round. The Premier League clubs may not enter until the later on but there are still some big names taking part already including Leeds United, Wolves and Middlesbrough. The first round of the domestic leagues have been put back a week to allow for the Olympics to finish, but with few of this matches taking place around Olympic events travel shouldn’t be an issue.

The League Cup final last season saw surprise finalists Cardiff City take on Liverpool at the famous Wembley. The Premier League side edged the match and claimed their trophy in what would prove to be a disappointing season for the Liverpool. Many clubs will eye this trophy as a realist shot of silverware and will be seen as a fantastic chance for clubs fans to visit Wembley.

The first round League cup matches taking place today are as follows.

Bury v Middlesbrough

Carlisle v Accrington

Cheltenham Town v MK Dons

Crewe v Hartlepool United

Doncaster Rovers v York City

Hull City v Rotherham

Leeds United v Shrewbury

Notts County v Bradford City

Rochdale v Barnsley

Sheffield United v Burton

Walsall v Brentford

Watford v Wycombe

Wolves v Aldershot

Middlesbrough visit Bury looking to avoid a potential banana skin at Gigg Lann. The bookies have Boro down as the big favourites at 5/6.

Leeds United are one of the biggest draws in the first round and at Elland Road they are going to be a tough side to beat they look a solid bet at 8/13 to win this one.

The Blades are inaction after the heartache of seeing their neighbours Wednesday win promotion to the Championship whilst they narrowly missed out. They are taking on Burton in the League Cup and should cruise into the second round.

Watford are big favourites to beat Wycombe and we are backing them at 3/5 to make it safely through to the second round.

The League Cup also gives as the opportunity to look for some potential cup shocks and Wolves host Aldershot in a match that could be potentially tricky for a side that will be more focused on securing promotion back to the Premier League.

Certainly the sides we are backing today are the two United sides Leeds United and Sheffield United, so it’s certainly worth putting them in a double or an acca.
